In a notable development for East Carolina University’s baseball program, sophomore left-handed pitcher Erik Ritchie was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 19th round (582nd overall) of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. This selection marks a significant milestone for both Ritchie and the ECU baseball team under the leadership of head coach Cliff Godwin.

Ritchie, who has been a standout performer for the Pirates, represents the 28th player drafted from ECU during Godwin’s tenure. His selection highlights the continued success of the Pirates’ baseball program and Godwin’s ability to develop talent ready for the professional ranks. This year, Ritchie is one of six ECU players drafted, underscoring a remarkable season for the program. This is the highest number of draft picks East Carolina has seen in a single year since 2019, when seven Pirates were selected.

Coach Godwin expressed his excitement about Ritchie’s draft status, praising his hard work and dedication. “Erik has been a tremendous asset to our team, and his selection in the draft is a testament to his talent and the effort he has put into developing his skills,” Godwin said. “We are incredibly proud of him and look forward to seeing him succeed at the next level.”

Ritchie’s selection in the 19th round reflects not only his potential but also the growing reputation of the East Carolina baseball program. As the sixth Pirate to be drafted in 2024, Ritchie joins a group of talented players making their mark in professional baseball. His journey from ECU to the Phillies is a significant step in what promises to be a bright future in the sport.

Under Godwin’s guidance, the Pirates have consistently produced major league talent, and Ritchie’s draft status reaffirms the program’s commitment to excellence and player development. With a strong track record of success, both the ECU baseball program and Coach Godwin look poised to continue their tradition of nurturing and producing high-caliber athletes for the major leagues.
