In a monumental move that’s sending shockwaves through the hockey world, the Colorado Avalanche have announced that Peter Forsberg, the legendary former forward and one of the franchise’s most iconic figures, is returning to the organization. Starting in the 2025–26 season, Forsberg will take on the newly established role of Chief Hockey Officer (CHO).
The announcement came earlier today via an official statement from the Kroenke family, owners of the Avalanche, who emphasized Forsberg’s enduring legacy and unmatched hockey IQ as key reasons for the appointment.
“Peter is Avalanche royalty,” said Josh Kroenke, Vice Chairman of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. “His passion, vision, and understanding of what it takes to win in this league are second to none. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome him back in a leadership role that will shape the next era of Avalanche hockey.”
A Hall of Fame Return
Forsberg, a Hockey Hall of Famer, was instrumental in leading the Avalanche to two Stanley Cup championships in 1996 and 2001. Known for his fierce competitiveness, dazzling playmaking, and physical style, he remains one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
Now, at age 52, Forsberg returns not to lace up the skates, but to help architect the future of the Avalanche from the front office. As Chief Hockey Officer, he will oversee all aspects of hockey operations, including player development, scouting, and strategic direction, working closely with the general manager and coaching staff.

In a brief media availability from his native Sweden, Forsberg expressed excitement and humility about his return.
“Colorado has always been home to me,” Forsberg said. “This franchise gave me everything, and now I’m honored to give back. I want to build on our proud tradition and help bring another Stanley Cup to Denver.”
