Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz should Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leave the club this summer.
That’s according to The Daily Mail, with the outlet claiming that Luiz and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher are among the players interesting Spurs.
Hojbjerg is facing an uncertain future at Tottenham and is attracting interest from Atletico Madrid.
The Mail notes that the 27-year-old is open to discussing a move to Madrid, with the two clubs edging closer to an agreement in recent days.
And Luiz has emerged as a target for Spurs should the Dane complete a switch to Atletico over the coming weeks.
Tottenham could move for Luiz
The Daily Mail reports that Luiz is one player who is of interest to Spurs should Hojbjerg depart. But it remains unclear whether Unai Emery would be open to selling the Brazilian after he played a key role at Villa last season.
Luiz racked up a total of 40 appearances in all competitions last time out and starred under Emery towards the end of the campaign.
Villa rejected a £25 million bid from Arsenal for Luiz last summer and after penning a new deal back in October, Emery’s men would be expected to demand a hefty fee for the 25-year-old.
Luiz has starred for Villa since making the switch from Manchester City back in 2019 and he has already received high praise from his former boss Pep Guardiola.
“He’s a guy who plays all of the minutes. He’s an important player for Aston Villa,” Guardiola told Birmingham Live back in April 2020.
“A guy who’s clever with the ball, so physically strong. He’s a lovely, lovely guy.
“Today, when he was involved in the game, defensively, offensively, he was good.”
The Spurs News View
Luiz would be an excellent addition to Postecoglou’s side and is exactly the type of midfielder Spurs need.
But it would be a surprise to see Villa sell the Brazilian to a direct rival, unless a huge offer arrived.
Tottenham haven’t exactly pushed the boat out when it comes to transfer fees of late and as Luiz has three years left on his current deal, it’s difficult to see Spurs paying over the odds for him.
