The Pittsburgh Steelers are undergoing a series of significant changes on the offensive side this offseason, beginning at quarterback. Now they’ve added another new face—a familiar one for Kansas City Chiefs fans—to the mix of competitors at tight end with the signing of Izaiah Gathings.
The Steelers are in the midst of an overhaul at quarterback with the additions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields this offseason. The team also invested three picks up front along the offensive line, including first-round tackle Troy Fautanu, and grabbed wideout Roman Wilson in the process.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking a flyer on a former Chiefs tight end as they set up competition for training camp.
A former wide receiver at MTSU, Gathings turned into a tight end at the pro level and profiles as a solid pass catcher who had 559 yards and 60 catches in his final season with the Blue Raiders.
Gathings had two stints with the Chiefs as a former rookie free agent who signed with the team following a failed short stint with the New York Jets following the 2023 NFL Draft. Gathings failed to make the team but he re-signed with K.C. late in December along with wide receiver Anthony Miller as practice squad additions.
For the Chiefs, Gathings was another bet on a product from Middle Tennessee State, a smaller program that has been good to Kansas City in the past. Cornerback Charvarius Ward played his college ball there, as did linebacker Darius Harris.
