According to reports, a midfielder who has outperformed James Maddison this season is being eyed by Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs will likely have a busy summer as they attempt to build on an encouraging inaugural year in which Ange Postecoglou was the head coach.

If Spurs win their final two games, the Australian manager still has a chance to finish in the top four. However, he also needs Aston Villa to lose at Crystal Palace.

Nevertheless, Champions League football or not, Spurs’ summertime plans are not going to alter.

Tottenham is reportedly planning to support Postecoglou this summer by adding three important players: a center-back, a midfielder, and a striker.

Spurs have now discovered a player who might give James Maddison some competition, according Football Transfers.

Spurs considering a deal for Alex Baena
According to the source, Spurs are considering a summer raid for Alex Baena, a midfield player for Villarreal.

Baena, a midfielder who can play on either side, is said to be a viable choice for Tottenham due to his versatility.

As Maddison has struggled in north London throughout the second half of the season, Postecoglou has not have a substitute for the Englishman.

After moving from Leicester City to Tottenham in the summer, Maddison had a spectacular debut. The 27-year-old made 11 Premier League appearances for the team, tallying three goals and five assists.

After suffering an ankle injury in November, Maddison’s stellar start at Tottenham was cut short, as he has only contributed four goals in 15 games since his comeback in January.

In contrast, Baena has had a reliable season with Villarreal. The midfield player has five goals and 17 assists in all competitions.

The Spaniard, who is 22 years old, appears to have a bright career ahead of him, and Postecoglou would really benefit from his versatility.

Baena would be a great midfield rival for Maddison as well as someone who can play off either flank.

Playing off the left side, the Spain international recorded a hat-trick of assists in a 3-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano just two weeks prior.
