In a move that has stunned fans, players, and executives alike, North Carolina senior guard Seth Trimble has not only made headlines for his exceptional skills on the court—but also for a heartwarming decision off of it.
Shortly after signing his rookie NBA contract, which includes a staggering $25 million signing bonus, the 6’3″ guard from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, announced he will be donating the entire bonus to a national network of children’s hospitals and youth mental health programs.
“Basketball has given me everything,” Trimble said at a press conference. “It’s time I gave something back—especially to the kids who might not have the same opportunities I did growing up.”
Trimble, known for his defensive grit, explosive first step, and leadership at UNC, said the inspiration for his generosity came from his younger brother’s battle with childhood anxiety and depression. The donation will be split between St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Youth Division, and newly funded community-based basketball clinics that offer therapy and mentorship.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called it “one of the most inspiring moments in recent league history,” and said the league is exploring ways to match portions of the donation through its social impact fund.
