Following a “new twist,” Man Utd is anticipated to make a “tempting” bid for a “elite” ex-Arsenal player for £40 million.

According to reports, Aston Villa are ‘braced’ for Man Utd to make a bid for World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez, who could replace David De Gea.

Erik ten Hag is looking to strengthen in various positions this summer after he helped United finish third in the Premier League last season.

The Red Devils are in the market for a new midfielder and striker, with Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani among their main targets.

They may also look to sign a new goalkeeper. David De Gea’s future is in doubt as his contract is due to expire.

United have the option to extend the Spaniard’s deal on the same terms until 2024 but they have instead been trying to get him to accept a significant pay cut.

Earlier this week, it was reported that De Gea recently signed a new contract, only for the club to back out and offer him another deal with a lower salary. He is now ‘considering his options’ but he is keen to ‘continue playing at the highest level’.

Man Utd are being heavily linked with Inter Milan’s Andre Onana and Porto’s Diogo Costa but Football Insider are reporting that ‘Villa are  braced for Man Utd’s offer for Martinez after a new twist’. The report adds.

Back in March, Martinez indicated that he “loves” being at Aston Villa and he indicated that he expects to remain at the club for “many years to come”.

“My career went through the roof since I joined the club. I’ve always said I’m grateful to this club and I love being here,” Martinez said (quotes via The Mirror).

“My family is happy at the club, my boy is obsessed with playing football and he plays for the under-6s in the academy. We’re loving our time here and hopefully, there are many years to come.”
