The five-year transfer of winger Arvin Appiah from Nottingham Forest to Almeria has been called a “fiasco.”

The Spanish team purchased the Nigel Doughty Academy alumnus from the Reds in 2019 for an estimated £8 million. However, since then, the 23-year-old has encountered some difficulties.

Since the transfer, Appiah has played on loan at Lugo, Tenerife, and Malaga. Currently, he is spending the entire season on loan with Rotherham United, where he has primarily been used as a substitute.

Almeria has acknowledged they would lose money if they eventually let Appiah go, according to Spanish daily Diario de Almeria, given the former England Under-19 international is finding it difficult to contribute in the Championship. His signing is described as “a blot on a list of successes” by them.

Appiah made eight senior appearances for Forest after coming up through the ranks. He marked his debut by scoring in a 3-2 League Cup defeat at Burton Albion as a substitute.

When it became apparent that Almeria would be leaving the City Ground, Manchester United beat them to his signature. When the transfer was completed, they made fun of the Premier League’s top teams by posting on social media, saying things like, “Sorry, Man Utd, Arvin Appiah is red and white.” The small child was further described as a “English pearl” by the Spanish publication Marca.
