In news that should surprise few, the Michigan football team formally announced that Sherrone Moore would be its next head coach Friday evening. Moore succeeds Jim Harbaugh in the role, as Harbaugh left the Wolverines after nine seasons for the Los Angeles Chargers Wednesday evening.

Moore, 37, becomes the 21st head coach in Michigan football history. He was promoted to the head job following a highly regarded tenure with the Wolverines as an assistant. He arrived from Central Michigan in 2018 as Michigan’s tight ends coach, then was promoted to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator ahead of the 2021 season. Before the Wolverines’ 2023 season, Moore was named full offensive coordinator, while maintaining offensive line coaching duties.

In addition to serving as an assistant coach, Moore actually went 4-0 as acting head coach last season, scoring top-10 wins at Penn State and against Ohio State while Harbaugh endured two separate three-game suspensions stemming from separate NCAA investigations

Known to be a passionate coach who tells players he wants to “coach them hard, love them harder,” Moore has been widely expected to be Michigan’s next head coach if or when Harbaugh left, as the Wolverines aim to maintain their recent run of success on the gridiron. Michigan is coming off a national championship-winning season that also included a 15-0 record, Rose Bowl win, third straight Big Ten title and third straight win over Ohio State.

Over the last three seasons, Michigan is 40-3, including seven wins over top-10 teams. Included in that run were Joe Moore Award-winning offensive lines in 2021 and 2022, and Moore was a Broyles Award finalist in 2023. Moore will be tasked with maintaining the team’s physical brand of play and gritty team culture, particularly on an offense that will have 10 new starters next season
