The transfer merry-go-round is firmly underway and both Everton and Nottingham Forest are at the forefront of it – with Forest beating Everton in the race for Anthony Elanga, and that may mean Everton go back in for Willy Gnonto.
Everton are the only club to make contact with Leeds and table an offer, with The Mail reporting – among numerous outlets – that the Toffees saw a £15m bid rejected. It is unclear if Everton are to come back in with an improved bid.
The Toffees are set to sign Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal, having missed out on a move in January to Tottenham. The Dutch ace, though, is more of a striker and Sean Dyche is clearly still in the market for a winger this summer.
The Telegraph now report that Forest have beaten Everton to the £15m capture of Sweden and Manchester United star Elanga. He will have a medical at the weekend, having rejected offers from West Ham, Everton and Marseille.
So, with Everton missing out on Elanga – who is joining Forest for the same price that Leeds rejected for Gnonto – it might mean that the Toffees go back in for our Italian wonderkid. It might be that they up their initial bid for our man.
Forest winning Elanga race may see Everton go back in for Gnonto
Gnonto is certainly likely to leave Leeds this summer. But to Everton? It seems that perhaps, Leeds’ desperation to keep Gnonto – and a lack of release clause – is deterring other sides. Serie A clubs are struggling to outlay big cash.
A return to the Premier League is Gnonto’s best bet of a move ahead of next summer’s Euro 2024. So, Everton looks like his likeliest port of call, and with Forest beating Everton to Elanga – surely, an improved Gnonto bid is incoming.
