Premier League leaders Aston Villa have reportedly been given the chance to sign AS Roma player Leonardo Spinazzola during the current January transfer window, according to Calciomercato.
The 30-year-old’s contract is about to expire, and an extension has not yet been discussed. It makes sense for them to take advantage of the veteran as Roma is unlikely to make one. His career in the Italian capital comes to an end when he offers his talents to Aston Villa.
To comply with Financial Fair Play requirements, the Italians must bring in as much money as they can, and profiting from Spinazzola is undoubtedly one option. The Serie A powerhouses have enough faith in him after his recent run of success to discontinue their affiliation.
Although moving to Saudi Arabia would be an option, the footballer is not in the mood to leave Europe. Villa has a significant advantage in this area should they decide to move forward.
Villa seems hesitant to pursue Spinazzola, even if they might not need to pay much to acquire the 30-year-old. Considering the player’s recent run of bad form, Unai Emery and company have every right to be wary.
Following his rupture of his Achilles tendon during Euro 2020, Spinnazola’s career has taken a severe hit. Since then, he has lost his place on the Italian squad and descended the club hierarchy. The fact that Roma now views him as disposable says volumes about Jose Mourinho’s desire to hold onto him.Moving to the physically demanding Premier League could not be an easy transition for him given his troubles. Emery already has Lucas Digne and Alex Moreno as his options at left back. The right-back positions are occupied by Matty Cash and Callum Chambers, giving the Villians decent depth.
Although Spinazzola is capable of filling both roles, he is not a starter and will only be a rotational alternative at most. It’s arguable if Villa needs to spend money on him at this time.
