Dennis Smith Jr. Rejoins Dallas Mavericks on One-Year Contract
September 24, 2025 – Dallas, TX
The Dallas Mavericks have signed guard Dennis Smith Jr. to a one-year contract in preparation for the 2025-26 NBA season, the team announced today.
Smith Jr., 27, returns to the franchise that drafted him ninth overall in the 2017 NBA Draft. He spent his first two seasons with the Mavericks before being traded in 2019 as part of the deal that brought Kristaps Porziņģis to Dallas.
Since then, Smith Jr. has played for several teams across the league, including the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and most recently, the Brooklyn Nets. Known for his explosive athleticism, defensive tenacity, and improved playmaking, Smith has carved out a role as a reliable rotation guard in recent years.
Mavericks GM Nico Harrison expressed optimism about the reunion, saying, “Dennis brings energy, experience, and a deep familiarity with our organization. He’s worked hard to refine his game, and we believe he can make a strong impact on both ends of the floor.”
The signing adds depth to a Mavericks backcourt led by Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, and gives head coach Jason Kidd additional options at the guard position.
Smith Jr. averaged 6.6 points, 3.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in the 2024-25 season with Brooklyn, showcasing his ability to contribute as a defensive specialist and secondary ball-handler.
This marks a full-circle moment for the former NC State standout, who now looks to reestablish himself in the city where his NBA journey began.
