Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, shown above on Thursday, has been ruled out for the season due to a ruptured ligament in his right wrist, according to the team.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced Friday that quarterback Joe Burrow will miss the rest of the season due to a ruptured ligament in his right wristBurrow and coach Zac Taylor both stated that the injury would most likely necessitate surgery. Burrow departed the game in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 34-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens after throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mixon that gave the Bengals a brief 10-7 lead. Burrow collapsed in anguish and clutched his wrist after the passHe claimed Friday that the injury most likely occurred on the previous play, when he landed on his wrist after delivering a 9-yard pass to Mixon and was hit by Jadeveon Clowney. Burrow went on to say that he didn’t realize he’d fallen on his wrist until he saw a video of the play

Joe Burrow injury: QB's tweet indicates he's out for seasonpted it but was unable to complete it, and I received the news today. “I had a feeling [what the outcome would be] before we got the official news,” said Burrow, who was 11 of 17 for 101 yards and a touchdown when he departed the gameBurrow’s assertion that his injury occurred during that hit came after the NFL stated it would look into why he was not listed on the team’s pregame injury report, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the review was not being discussed publicly.

The Bengals had tweeted and later deleted a video on social media that appeared to show Burrow wearing a soft cast before the game, but the star quarterback insisted he was merely wearing a compression sleeve, which he has previously worn on flights.

Burrow attempted practice tosses on the sideline after leaving the game, but the ball slipped out of his grasp as he groaned in pain. Burrow then walked into the locker room, looking furious.Burrow has suffered a season-ending injury in Week 11 for the second time in his four-year NFL career. In 2020, he tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee during a game versus Washington. He returned the following season to lead Cincinnati to its first Super Bowl berth since 1988.

“I’ve been through this before, so it’s nothing new to me.” As I already stated, this is football, and things like this happen. “You just have to learn to live with it,” Burrow explained.

Taylor also didn’t seem concerned about Burrow’s ability to recover.

“He’s wired differently. That’s why we’re lucky to have him. That’s why he’s accomplished so much in his life, because he’s able to overcome failures and problems and plays with a chip on his shoulder,” Taylor explained

Friday’s news also brings an end to Burrow’s injury-plagued season, despite the fact that he signed a five-year contract extension worth $275 million US before the start of the regular season. The average salary of $55 million per season set a new high for an NFL player.

On the second day of training camp, he suffered a calf injury and missed the preseason. He returned in time for the regular season to begin, but the Bengals lost three of their first four games. During that time, Burrow had two touchdowns and two interceptions with a passing rating of 69.1.

After that, Burrow and the Bengals appeared to have turned things around, going on a four-game winning streak that included triumphs against San Francisco and Buffalo. In Week 8, he tossed three touchdowns and had a 134.8 passer rating in a 31-17 win over the 49ers, and he followed that up with a season-high 348 yards and two touchdowns against the Bills in a prime-time game

The Bengals, on the other hand, have lost their previous two games and are 5-5, with backup Jake Browning slated to start the rest of the season. On the roster is also veteran AJ McCarron.

Browning completed 8 of 14 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He was on the Bengals’ practice squad for the previous two seasons before being promoted to Burrow’s backup this season.

Browning attended the University of Washington before being undrafted. He spent the 2019 and ’20 seasons on Minnesota’s practice squad.

On Friday afternoon, Taylor reiterated his belief in Browning.

“Having confidence is an important aspect of the battle of playing quarterback. It’s not simply that you go out there and put on a brave front, hoping to fool everyone into thinking you know what you’re doing,” Taylor explained. “Jake has demonstrated this by his deeds. Guys, I believe, hold Jake in great regard and value the work he does. I can’t emphasize enough the types of questions he’s asked in meetings to ensure he’s prepared.
