Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has opted to remove head coach Frank Reich after only 11 games with the team. Unfortunately, Carolina began the season with a 1-10 record and has shown little indications of progress in recent weeks. “I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers,” Tepper said in an online statement. “I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well.”

For the seventh week in a row, the Panthers scored 15 or less points in Week 12. Based on his QBR, quarterback Bryce Young is the worst NFL signal-caller.

Last offseason, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson interviewed with the Panthers, but eventually elected to stay in Detroit owing to a strong sense of unfinished business. Many believe Johnson might be a target again now that the team has an opening. According to NFL media, “it wouldn’t be a surprise if they made a run at him, among others.”

Detroit’s gifted offensive play-caller has consistently avoided questions about his future, preferring to focus on his weekly preparation and working with head coach Dan Campbell to enhance the offense. Johnson is likely to be the most sought-after head coaching candidate this summer, so it would be extremely surprising if he chose to work for an owner who has lost respect in the NFL world due to his obvious demand for involvement with Panthers football operations.

Currently, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will act as the Panthers’ interim coach, with Jim Caldwell serving as an offensive special assistant.
