Joe Burrow has been placed on the injured reserve list by the Cincinnati Bengals, with the quarterback unlikely to play again this season.
Burrow will miss the rest of the season after leaving the Bengals’ game against the Baltimore Ravens on November 16 with a wrist injury.
His injury was initially classified as a sprain, but it was later determined that he will require surgery due to shredding ligaments in his wrist.
‘Obviously, you have a lot of hopes for how the season will go,’ Burrow told reporters on Friday. ‘What the end of the season will look like. We were at a good location.
‘Things were starting to go south. You’re becoming pretty good, and then something like this happens. There is nothing you can do about it. It’s only a matter of perseverance.
Burrow completed 11 of 17 throws for a total of 101 yards. He also completed a four-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mixon before leaving the game due to soreness in his throwing hand.
‘I landed on my wrist a little bit the play before it happened, and the following play, the touchdown pass, I just felt a pop in the middle of the throw,’ Burrow explained. ‘I attempted to accomplish it but was unable to complete it. Obviously, I got the news today, so it’s not good.’
Soon after the game, the NFL began looking into the Bengals for a possible injury report compliance issue. The probe was prompted by various social media pictures in which Burrow was seen wearing a wrap on his injured wrist upon the Bengals’ arrival in Maryland.
On Friday, Ravens coach Zach Taylor stated that the bandage Burrow was wearing had nothing to do with the injury.
With seven games remaining this season, the Bengals are 5-5. They are now last in the AFC North, trailing their next opponent, Pittsburgh.
