Adam Johnson, a three-season member of the Pittsburgh Penguins organisation, died Saturday after an on-ice incident during a professional game in the United Kingdom.

Johnson played forward for the Elite Ice Hockey League’s Nottingham Panthers. The league acknowledged his death in a social media statement, saying:

“The Elite Ice Hockey League is saddened to announce that Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson died in a freak accident during Saturday’s game between the Sheffield Steelers and the Nottingham Panthers.” In light of this heartbreaking news, the Elite League has rescheduled all games for Sunday, October 29, 2023. At this extremely sad and difficult time, everyone associated with the EIHL sends their thoughts and sympathies to Adam’s family, friends, and teammates. We would also urge that everyone respect Adam’s family’s privacy at this time.”

Johnson was reportedly injured in a collision during the game at Utilita Arena in Sheffield, England. He tried to return to the bench but was prevented by teammates.
