KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Sept. 13, 2025 — The Tennessee Volunteers have no shortage of exciting young talent heading into the 2025 college football season, but one name stands out: Boo Carter.
A sophomore defensive back with a flair for the spotlight, Carter is not only earning reps on defense — he’s drawing serious attention as a potential two-way star, with Tennessee coaches experimenting with him on offense and special teams as well.
And if you’re new to following the Vols or SEC football, here’s what you need to know: Boo Carter is one of the most electric, versatile athletes in college football — and he’s just getting started.
Who Is Boo Carter?
Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Carter came to Knoxville as one of the top-ranked athletes in the state. A 4-star recruit and All-American coming out of high school, Carter immediately made his presence felt as a freshman in 2024, recording 38 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 1 interception, while returning punts with explosive burst.
Now entering his second year, Carter is being asked to do even more — and he’s embracing the challenge.
“Playing both sides of the ball has always been a dream,” Carter told local media in spring practice. “I just want to help the team win — wherever they need me.”
A Unique Role in the SEC
It’s rare to see players make a legitimate impact on both offense and defense at the Power Five level — especially in the rugged SEC. But Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel isn’t ruling it out.
“Boo’s a competitor. We’re going to use his skillset creatively,” Heupel said during fall camp. “He’s electric with the ball in his hands. He can make a difference in all three phases.”
On defense, Carter is expected to play at the “STAR” position, Tennessee’s hybrid safety/nickel role — one that demands speed, instincts, and leadership.
But in recent practices, he’s also been spotted lining up in the slot on offense, running routes and catching passes. If this package becomes permanent, Carter could join an elite group of players to contribute significantly on both sides of the ball in the modern era.
Offseason Setbacks – But Still On Track
This summer, Carter’s journey hit a brief speed bump when he missed some team activities. Coach Heupel confirmed Carter remained with the team but acknowledged he needed to meet “certain expectations” to return to full playing time.
Since then, Carter has been seen in full pads, participating in defensive back drills and getting reps in team scrimmages — a strong sign he’s trending toward full eligibility for the season opener.
Despite some uncertainty earlier in camp, there’s been no indication that Carter won’t be a major part of Tennessee’s plans moving forward.
Why Boo Carter Matters for Tennessee
With key defensive departures and high expectations for 2025, the Vols need playmakers — and Carter fits the mold. Whether he’s covering slot receivers, blitzing off the edge, fielding punts, or catching passes across the middle, his versatility could be a game-changer.
Tennessee fans know the Vols are building something big under Heupel — and Boo Carter may be one of the most important pieces in that puzzle.
