Everton look set to be on the verge of signing Jonny Evans on a free transfer following a social media slip-up by the club.

A training ground video, which was posted on the Toffees’ socials and has since been deleted, shows James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil playing a game of tag.

But if you listen in closely to the audio, an Everton coach can be heard saying “we’ve got Jonny Evans coming in,” suggesting that the out of contract Leicester City captain will be the next player through the door at Goodison Park.

If the coach’s words are to be believed, then it looks like Everton have secured their next summer signing and it’s another vastly experienced Premier League player, who has amassed more than 350 appearances in the top flight.

The club’s actions in taking the video down suggest there is definitely something in it, so it shouldn’t be long before an announcement is made or Sean Dyche is called into answering questions about it.Jonny Evans - Player profile 23/24 | Transfermarkt

It’s by no means the way the media team would’ve liked to announce the signing, but it gives an indication as to the type of player the Toffees boss is trying to bring in this summer.

There is no secret that Dyche is operating under financial constraints and he’ll be looking at the free agent market – like he did with Ashley Young – to beef up his squad ahead of the new campaign.

But Evans isn’t getting any younger at 35 and keeping him fit could be an issue after he only played 13 games last season.
