Jerry Jeudy, a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, hasn’t played all that well this season. According to playerprofiler.com, Jeudy averaged 2.29 yards per route run the previous season, thus he appeared to be poised for a breakthrough performance this year. In terms of receptions last season, he topped the Broncos. The arrow for Jeudy was directed upward with Sean Payton as his new coach. The most noteworthy thing that happened to Jerry Jeudy this season, though, was seeing him be completely destroyed on live TV by NFL Network commentator and former All-Pro wide receiver Steve Smith Sr.

Jerry Jeudy was selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draught, ahead of players like Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Brandon Aiyuk, Michael Pittman Jr., and Tee Higgins. That was not too long ago. However, a poor start to his career—Jeudy has gained 2,581 yards in his first 47 games of the fourth NFL season; in just eight more games, Jefferson has more than double that amount—combined with a coaching change has Jeudy firmly on the trade block. Bill Barnwell of ESPN suggested a fictitious trade in which Jeudy would be moved to the Green Bay Packers. What is the deal, and would it be worthwhile for the Broncos or Packers to complete that trade?

Even though Jerry Jeudy’s career hasn’t lived up to his elite status thus far, he is still likely a superior receiver than Romeo Doubs. However, there are several kinds of receivers. Doubs has been used in place of Courtland Sutton, who is the Packers’ X receiver at the moment.

The Packers use Doubs to win 50/50 balls and take downfield shots. Although he hasn’t been particularly effective throughout his career, he has done okay in that job. After reaching that milestone the previous season and continuing at that pace to start this one, Doubs is averaging 1.51 yards per route run throughout his career. That’s alright, nothing exceptional.

In addition to Christian Watson, who is also mostly used downfield, the Packers might benefit by using him even more as an X receiver and having Jerry Jeudy emerge as the team’s best chain mover in the middle of the field. He would go really well with Watson and rookie slot receiver Jayden Reed; nevertheless, Jeudy and Reed do share some similarities in terms of game and skill level.

Though Green Bay has an extra second-round pick at their disposal, the price tag of a second-round pick may be prohibitive for the Packers to pay given the talent and fit. This is a decent trade, but given that Jeudy is expected to receive a contract extension shortly, the Packers would get better value if they were paying a third-round pick rather than a second and getting a fourth in return.

Even though Toney was selected by the Giants a year after Jeudy was selected by the Broncos, the circumstances are strikingly similar: two former first-round picks whose teams appear prepared to let go of them following the hiring of a new coaching staff.
