Released Nottingham Forest player Jordan Smith has now penned a one-year contract with League Two outfit Stockport County. The League Two outfit lost in the Play-Off Final last season and will hope to be in the frame for promotion again this season.
Smith has spent a large amount of his life at Forest. He was released at the end of his last contract, however, and was considered the third-choice stopper for the first half of 2022/23.
The goalkeeper will be desperate to get the chance to play some regular football next season. Stockport could give him that chance; although he will have to oust fan favourite Ben Hinchcliffe first.
Smith has been a loyal servant to the Reds. Every Forest fan remembers the save he made back in 2017 against Ipswich when the Reds were staring down the barrel of relegation to League One.
It hasn’t always been easy for Smith at Forest. More often than not, he’s found himself out of the senior reckoning, although he does leave with 54 appearances to his name, with 12 clean sheets kept during that time.
Smith has claimed that Nick Colgan who used to work at Forest was very eager to bring him to Stockport. The man who used to coach the Reds is now in place at Edgeley Park in a similar role.
The goalkeeper told the club’s official YouTube channel: “Well, I’m lucky enough that I’ve worked with Nick Colgan before at Forest. He was quite eager to involve me in this journey that the club is going on. As soon as I knew, it was something I was excited to be a part of
Colgan instrumental in Smith transfer after Forest exit
Nobody deserves this move more. Smith has spent over 20 years at the City Ground and he’s handled himself as a model professional during his time at the football club.
The 28-year-old now needs to focus on playing football. Although Smith was never going to get a Premier League or Championship club, he should feel confident of getting regular game time at Stockport.
Forest fans will naturally wish Smith well. This is a move that makes perfect sense and clearly, he feels that the relationship he has with Colgan can serve him well at Edgeley Park
