Birmingham City have been informed that Maikel Kieftenbeld will be out for an extended period of time owing to a knee injury.
The Dutch midfielder was injured in the 57th minute of Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Leeds United and had to be carried off on a stretcher.Kieftenbeld has since undergone scans and medical examinations, which revealed that he has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and would be out for six to nine months.
The match against Leeds on Saturday was Kieftenbeld’s 163rd appearance since joining Blues from Dutch side Groningen in 2015 and he’s been a regular pick for Garry Monk this term.
Blues have revealed they are looking to trigger the one-year extension in Kieftenbeld’s current contract which is due to expire in 2020.
The 28-year-old is an incredibly popular figure at St Andrew’s due to his energetic displays in midfield and he will no doubt be a big miss for supporters and Monk alike.
Blues say Kieftenbeld will ‘get the best possible care’ from their team of physios and medical staff at Wast Hills as he begins his road to recovery.
