The date of October 1, 1903, is significant in Major League Baseball history because it marks the beginning of the modern World Series, with Game 1 between the Boston Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The American and National League champions met, with the Pirates winning the first game of the series 7-3.

Tommy Leach went 4-for-5 with an RBI for the Pirates, while Jimmy Sebring blasted a home run off Cy Young as part of his 3-for-5 day with four RBIs.

Boston won the World Series 5-3 and became the first team to do so.

Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees were locked in a home run duel until the bitter finish in 1961. Every player was attempting to break Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record of 60. Maris broke the record against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium just days after tying it.

Maris concluded the 1961 season with an MLB-high 61 home runs and 132 RBI. It would be the only occasion in his career that he surpassed 100 runs. He won his second consecutive MVP award and helped the Yankees win the World Series.

In 1997, Garnett and the Timberwolves agreed to a six-year, $125 million contract. It was the biggest long-term contract in professional sports history at the time. He remained with the Minnesota Timberwolves through the 2006-07 season before being traded to the Boston Celtics, where he won an NBA championship.The Timberwolves’ greatest player in team history is the Basketball Hall of Famer.

He tied his personal record with his eighth win of the PGA Tour season.

Woods made history by becoming the first golfer to win at least eight major championships.
