After only 10 league games at King’s Lynn, a former Pompey captain is looking for a new coaching job.
Adrian Whitbread was appointed assistant manager of the National League North club in June after previously managing in Puerto Rico, Antigua, and Bahrain.
However, the veteran coach’s tenure with the Linnets came to an end this week after 103 days.
And he was accompanied out the door by his right-hand man, who made 158 appearances for Pompey over nearly six years on the south coast.
After reaching the National League North play-offs last season before succumbing to Kidderminster Harriers, there were great hopes that Whitbread’s summer hiring would help the club improve on that close call.
Instead, they are looking for a new management team after only one win in 11 games in all competitions this season.
Whitbread had most recently been Martin Allen’s assistant at Barnet and subsequently Chesterfield, with the latter terminating in December 2018 following Allen’s departure.
He played in the Premier League for Swindon and West Ham before joining Fratton Park on loan from the Hammers in November 1995 for the remainder of the season.
Terry Fenwick’s men finished eighth in Division One that season, only three points short of the play-offs, with the central defender returning on a permanent basis in October 1996.
Whitbread captained the Blues throughout his spell on the south coast, but he left for Reading in July 2001 after falling out of favour and being farmed out to the Royals and Luton Town.
However, he only made 37 more appearances before retiring in April 2003 due to a knee injury at the age of 31.
His last club was Exeter, where he made seven appearances during a three-month loan before being forced to put up his boots.
Whitbread has served as a coach at Barnet, Brentford, MK Dons, Leicester, Chesterfield, Puerto Rico, Antigua Barracuda FC, and Bahrain’s U23 team.
