Pep Guardiola picks four Manchester City reserves who pleased him against Newcastle.

Pep Guardiola insists there is no disappointment in Manchester City’s quadruple hopes failing at the first hurdle, instead emphasising three players who took their chance in the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.

Due to injury, suspension, and illness, City made several substitutions against Newcastle, including Erling Haaland, Kyle Walker, and Ruben Dias. In their place, Julian Alvarez started up front, Oscar Bobb made his entire debut, and Sergio Gomez made his first appearance in his natural right wing position.

Guardiola was impressed with those players, as well as midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who made his first start of the season.

“Oscar was more than brilliant, in all departments, defensively, offensively,” stated the supervisor. “He plays an incredible game.” Sergio was excellent, as was Rico [Lewis], and everyone performed admirably.”

When asked about Bobb’s first-half performance, Guardiola praised his adaptability but regretted the youngster’s decision to pass to Alvarez when a shot was on.

“He played ten, striker, and winger.” He’s known to move around in the pockets. “We know how intense he is,” Guardiola remarked. “The work without the ball, the tempo is incredible, and the first half was an action with Julian, who was a little shy.” The way the defender defends, he should have finished the action, but it’s common at that age.”

Guardiola also lauded Phillips, saying he has put himself in position to start against Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.

“He performed admirably. It’s difficult to perform without rhythm or minutes. “He did it and played really well,” the manager added.

“Everyone has a shot [against the Wolves].” We have time to consider it.”
