The combination of Jose Cifuentes and Scott Wright in Cyriel Dessers’ victory over Motherwell, according to former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch, was brilliant.

It’s safe to say a well-worked victory over Stuart Kettlewell’s high-flying team was not enough to brighten the gloomy atmosphere on the terraces as the boos reverberated across Ibrox – and not for the first time this season either.

The goodwill that Rangers had generated against Real Betis on Thursday quickly vanished as Mick Beale’s team once again relied on Jack Butland and some tenacious James Tavernier defence.

However, despite the fact that Matondo’s daisy-cutter clipped Dessers’ heel and flew in during the first half, the move that dismantled Motherwell’s defence caught everyone’s attention. Cifuentes broke the lines, Scott Wright flicked the ball to Lammers, who then set up the in-form Welshman before Dessers wheeled away.

A tiny touch of Cifuentes’ magic. If you look at Scott Wright, he’s just peeled in and what a beautiful touch that is, moving the midfield four out with the pass,” McCulloch tells BBC SportsSound. “He can move (and send the ball) wide again.

It’s a fantastic touch (by Wright to set up Lammers),” Wright said. Yes, Matondo gives them a little bit of luck there. I’m not sure if that will go in, but it obviously requires a deflection from Dessers, who will bet on it.

“I’m very, very lucky. But my point is that it’s a fantastic play during the build-up.

First of many for Dessers?

Cyriel Dessers on target for Rangers in narrow home win

The latest in a string of poor home displays from a team currently four points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in third place, Rangers’ moments of such fluidity were sadly few and far between against Motherwell.

Dessers’ long-awaited maiden Premiership goal could serve as a much-needed confidence booster for a player who has recently appeared to lack it.
