Former defender Ciaran Clark of Newcastle United and Aston Villa has been linked to a transfer to Stoke City.

The 33-year-old can sign outside of the transfer window because he is a free agent, which would add to manager Alex Neil’s and the recruiting staff’s busy summer as they continue to rebuild the team following last season’s 16th-place finish in the Championship. After six years at Newcastle United and 129 appearances for the club, Clark was let go in the summer.
The new-look squad’s center back position appears to be where Stoke would be most vulnerable to injury or suspension, however new midfielder Wouter Burger might slide into that position.

if necessary, into a more protective position. Clubs can still sign players who were free agents before the transfer market closed on Friday even if it did.

During the summer transfer window, Stoke participated in 37 transactions, including 18 acquisitions. On the day of the deadline, Lynden Gooch, Sead Hakbanovi, and Junior Tchamadeu submitted their work.
Before signing a £5 million contract with Newcastle in 2016, Clark played 159 first-team games for Aston Villa after progressing through their youth program. He played ten league games while on loan at Sheffield United during the previous season, at which time they earned automatic promotion from the Championship.

Due to the international break, Stoke is idle this weekend; however, they will play again on Saturday, September 16, when they travel to Norwich. After losing to Preston 2-0 at home on Saturday, they will be hoping to avenge their previous four home victories in league and cup games this year.Newcastle United loanee Ciaran Clark opens up on Sheffield United loan and his promotion hope - YorkshireLive

With six points from their first five games, Stoke was in 16th place after the Preston loss. In addition, after victories over Rotherham and West Brom at home to advance them through the first two rounds of the Carabao Cup, they will play at Bournemouth.
