Stewart of Southampton provides an injury update and explains the transfer.
SAINTS signing Ross Stewart explained his decision to switch Sunderland for St Mary’s and says his injury recovery is “going well”.
The former Sunderland hitman, who signed a three-year deal on deadline day, has been out injured since January with an Achilles concern.
Scottish international Stewart netted 40 goals in 80 matches for the Black Cats prior and adds competition to Che Adams for the Southampton striking role.
However, he is not expected to be fit for at least the next few matches despite the international break now coming into play.
Stewart stated of his rehabilitation when speaking to the club website: “It’s progressing nicely. Ideally, I won’t be too far away.
“It’s definitely the closest I’ve felt to being back in a long time, whether it’s been six or seven months. Hopefully, the games are approaching, and I am eager to return.
Stewart went on to say that Southampton is a huge club, which helped him decide to go from the northeast to the south.
It’s going well, Stewart responded when asked about his rehabilitation on the club website. I’m hoping to be close by.
“It’s definitely the closest to being back I’ve been in a long time, whether it’s been six, seven months or longer. Hopefully, the games will soon begin, and I can’t wait to return.
Stewart continued, “Southampton is a large club, which is why I decided to move from the northeast to the south.
“Everything he said to me was really encouraging, which usually helps with decisions. I’ve been wanting to relocate here ever since he and Jason (Wilcox) started talking, so I’m thrilled to be here.
Although Stewart has visited the hospital, his 13 goals in 10 Championship games provide him Football League experience.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis, the Championship winner from last season, was hired by Saints and manager Martin to strengthen the defence as part of their desire to bring expertise to their team.
The 2021–22 League One season, in which Stewart played all 49 games and scored 26 goals, including one in the playoff final, demonstrated his tenacity.
It’ll be really helpful, he remarked. “I suppose my participation in so many games during that season and being around a successful team. I’m positive that it is the situation here.
It will be beneficial. We want our team to contend for the league’s top spot and return to the Premier League, where it belongs.
“Having accomplished that in League One, I hope to repeat it here, and I’ll do everything in my power to make that happen. I’m hoping I can join the team and contribute positively.
