Joining Celtic would have been an ‘insanely exciting’ opportunity but Mathias Kvistgaarden is not disappointed to still be a Brondby player following the close of the Scottish Premiership window.
If ever-dangerous Dane was tuning into Sunday’s Old Firm derby – Celtic triumphing 1-0 in a highly-forgettable encounter at Ibrox – then he’d have received a very timely reminder about the size of the task that would have faced him at the Hoops.
Any striker going head to head with Kyogo Furuhashi for a place in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI must almost feel like someone foolish enough to challenge Arnold Schwarzenegger to an arm wrestle. Kyogo, comfortably the best player in Scotland, fizzed home a stunning winner on the stroke of half time against Rangers, and the prospect of life on the Celtic bench may make that aborted summer switch to Glasgow a little easier for Kvistgaarden to handle.
“This is the first time for me that this has happened. So, of course, it is something that is on your mind,” Kvistgaarden tells Discovery Plus. “When you went on Facebook and saw that your face was on a rumour right in front.
“It is of course great and a huge honour. But it was something that was in my head, and you thought of it a little.”
Celtic like Brondby ace Mathias Kvistgaarden
Reports suggesting that Celtic were ‘very close’ to signing the £6 million-rated Kvistgaarden may have been a little premature. But should the Denmark U21 international maintain his current form, there is no reason why Rodgers will not come calling again in the winter.
“There is no doubt that it is insanely exciting and a huge club. But I left things up to people other than myself. I concentrated as much as possible on training every day, and being on time and doing my things,” Kvistgaarden adds.
“I love Brondby. I still love pulling the yellow jersey over my head every time.”
Kvistgaarden – as much a creator as he is a finisher – has two goals and three assists in seven Superligaen games this season.
