In a seismic shift that has rocked the NBA coaching landscape, Steve Kerr, the longtime head coach of the Golden State Warriors, has accepted a massive $93.4 million offer to become the new head coach of the Phoenix Suns, sources confirmed Wednesday morning.
The deal, which spans six years, instantly makes Kerr one of the highest-paid coaches in NBA history. The Suns officially announced the hiring in a press conference at Footprint Center, where Kerr appeared alongside Suns owner Mat Ishbia and General Manager James Jones.
“After a decade of unforgettable success in Golden State, I felt the time was right for a new challenge,” Kerr said. “The Suns have the talent, the hunger, and the leadership to do something truly special—and I’m excited to be a part of that.”
Kerr’s decision to leave Golden State, where he won four NBA championships and coached some of the greatest teams in league history, has stunned fans and analysts alike. His partnership with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green helped define an era of modern basketball. But with the Warriors entering a transitional phase and the Suns built to win now, the move signals a bold new chapter for the 59-year-old coach.
According to sources close to the situation, Kerr was impressed by the Suns’ commitment to building a championship culture around stars Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, and Kevin Durant—the latter of whom Kerr coached during two of their title runs with the Warriors.
Golden State issued a brief statement thanking Kerr for his “unparalleled leadership, integrity, and the legacy of greatness he leaves behind.”
“We’re forever grateful to Steve. He elevated not just our franchise, but the game of basketball,” the statement read.
Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, known for aggressive moves to turn the franchise into a title contender, called Kerr’s hiring a “game-changer.”
“We wanted a proven leader with championship DNA. Steve Kerr is that and more. This is about building something lasting,” Ishbia said.
Kerr is expected to begin working with the Suns front office immediately to finalize his coaching staff and develop off-season strategies ahead of training camp.
For now, the NBA world is still catching its breath—because one of the most successful coaches of the modern era just made the biggest move of the summer.
