West Brom make approach to sign Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden on loan
West Brom have made an approach to sign Isaac Hayden on loan from Newcastle United, according to Darren Witcoop.
The Sunday Mirror journalist posted on his personal Twitter page on Thursday [31 August] that fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are also interested in taking Hayden on loan.
Hayden had supposedly been due to join Luton Town earlier this week, only for a move to the recently promoted Premier League club to collapse.
Witcoop posted: “West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday among the Championship clubs to have asked Newcastle about taking midfielder Isaac Hayden on loan.
“Hayden saw a move to Luton collapse this week. Fellow Magpies outcast Jeff Hendrick also heading to the second-tier.”
Carlos Corberan said at the start of pre-season that bringing in free agents and Premier League loanees could hold the key to West Brom’s summer transfer business.
So it has proved, with former England U21 international Hayden – well out of the picture at St James’ Park – possibly the latest to arrive at The Hawthorns for a minimal fee.
Hayden is predominantly a defensive midfielder, but he is also comfortable playing in the heart of defence – versatility that makes him the ideal type of signing for Corberan.
The Arsenal academy product featured 14 times in the Championship for Norwich City last season and brings plenty of experience with him.
This would be a very astute signing for the Baggies if they can reach an agreement with Newcastle and Hayden, helping to strengthen both the backline and central midfield in one fell swoop.
