Brodie Spencer insists joining Motherwell on loan was a “no-brainer” after growing up watching Scottish football.
The 19-year-old joined the Steelmen on Thursday from Huddersfield Town in the English Championship, and he was thrown in at the deep end on Saturday, making his debut from the start in a dramatic 2-1 win over Kilmarnock.
The Belfast boy set up Dan Casey to score the goal that cancelled out Marley Watkins’ opener for Killie, before Harry Paton won it for Motherwell with the last kick of the ball in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
It was a debut to remember and he admits he is thrilled to be in the Premiership having watched it on TV as a child, although he admitted the pace of the game still took a bit of getting used to.
He said: “I love Scottish football. I’m from Belfast and Scottish football is so big there.
“I’ve grown up watching it and as soon as I heard a big club like Motherwell were interested, it was a no-brainer for me to come here.
The fan base was a big attraction as well and I’m happy to be here.
“Watching it is one thing, but when you are in it, it is a completely different thing.
“The first 15 minutes I was absolutely blown out, but I was happy just to work my way into the game after that.
“I’ve just been in the door a few days so it’s a new system, new faces, everything was a bit new, so to be starting gives me a big confidence boost.
“Going out there and getting an assist on my debut, hopefully that shows the manager that I am ready to play week in, week out.”
Spencer will be hoping to hold on to a starting jersey for Sunday’s trip to the capital to face Hearts.
The Steelmen travel to Tynecastle looking to maintain their unbeaten start against a Jambos side also enjoying a strong start, with four points from two games heading into today’s clash with Dundee.
And it is a test Spencer is relishing.
He said: “These are the games you need to look forward to, where you are going there looked upon as the underdog, away from home.
