It feels like Lewis Hall will be the last signing Newcastle United make this summer, but a new report suggests that might not be the case.
The Magpies have had a sensational summer so far, adding four fresh faces to Eddie Howe’s squad. Newcastle now have more depth and are better equipped to deal with the rigours of the Champions League.
In an ideal world, Hall would not be the last summer addition. Adding a centre-back would cap off an outstanding transfer window, but that feels unlikely due to financial fair play concerns.
However, a new report in Italy has suggested that Newcastle could actually make one more signing, and it might not even be a centre-back.
Newcastle could make move for Hirving Lozano
According to Spazio Napoli, Newcastle could make a late move to sign Hirving Lozano.
They state that the £36million attacker is now in the final year of his contract at Napoli and either needs to be sold this summer or he will leave for nothing in 2024. The report adds that he has turned down a contract extension, as it would see him earn less money at the Serie A side.
Spazio Napoli add that a move to Saudi Arabia was a possibility, with PIF eyeing a deal for the 28-year-old winger. However, they add that Newcastle could give Lozano the chance to continue his career in Europe.
The opportunity to play for the Magpies would surely appeal to the Mexico international. It would allow him to continue competing in the Champions League, while it is his ‘dream‘ to play for a club in the Premier League.
It could be a good move by Newcastle too, as it would give Howe even more depth in attack. Lozano is primarily a right winger, but can play anywhere across the forward line.
However, this absolutely is not going to happen. The Italian media are hardly the most reliable, as we found out during our ‘interest’ in Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.
While Lozano is a great player, there is no way he is coming to St James’ Park. At 28, he is probably too old for Newcastle to significantly invest in, while the club do not even have the funds available to buy him.
Even if Newcastle did have the funds, Howe would be prioritising a new centre-back, not a winger.
File this one under the ‘definitely not happening’ category.
